Why Everyone Will Love Riding in the CX-90 PHEV

Drivers with serious passenger needs and strict fuel budgets everywhere celebrated when Mazda released the CX-90 PHEV, a striking three-row SUV with a plug-in hybrid powertrain. Mazda has always had a reputation for marrying stunning design features with the most modern technology, all with a spirited behind-the-wheel feel, and it has done it again with this fuel-efficient people hauler.

The CX-90 has seating for seven, and thanks to its 2.5L Skyactiv engine combined with a 68 kW electric motor, drivers who need three rows of seating don’t have to accept the fate of spending a fortune on gas. This model has an impressive EPA-estimated electric range of 25 miles and an efficiency of 56 MPGe, which means more exploring and less pulling over to plug in. Plus, each CX-90 PHEV comes with a portable Level 1 charger to plug into 120-volt outlets. But today, we want to talk about what’s inside this model.

We are excited to be a Mazda CX-90 dealer because we’ve personally loved hopping behind the wheel and in each row of this three-row SUV to test it out. One thing that has stood out to us about the CX-90 PHEV is the generous array of rear seat amenities. Toss out any memories you have of being stuck in the back row of a large SUV and feeling like you got the bad seat. The CX-90 spoils passengers in all three rows. You can feel good about putting even the pickiest riders in any seat of this vehicle. Let’s take a look at how it pulls it off.

Smartly-Placed Compartments for All of Your Belongings

Maybe in your parent’s SUV, you had to fight for a tiny cubby to stash your books and drinks in. That won’t be the case for passengers in the CX-90. There are rear door bottle holders with storage pockets, giving backseat passengers a place to keep their drinks, magazines, snacks, and other road trip essentials. Plus, there are seatback pockets, which create the perfect place to put reading material or stash a phone charger.

The second row even gets a center console with storage in higher trims. This is a great place for rear-seat passengers to keep small devices, wallets, or other valuables. Now, as the driver, you don’t have to share your console with your passengers. That’s all yours. If you chauffeur a full SUV around town, everyone will appreciate having convenient places to keep their belongings, and you’ll appreciate that they don’t just toss their things on the floor. Tidy floors and happy passengers—that’s a win-win.

Chargers and Outlets for Everyone

Today, people are used to having access to charging ports everywhere, from coffee shops to airport gates. Now, you can make sure that all of your passengers in every row can keep their tablets and smartphones powered up. That’s because there are two USB Type C chargers in both the second and third rows. Say goodbye to backseat fights over a singular charging port.

Furthermore, on the upper trims, there is a 1,500-watt household power outlet that can be used to power larger electronics and accessories when the car is parked. For smaller devices, there are both 150-watt household outlets and 12-volt power outlets. Between these outlets, your passengers should be able to plug in a variety of items to handle homework or stream entertainment on the road.

Second-Row Passengers Can Sit Like Royalty

Your second-row passengers will feel thoroughly spoiled in the available captain’s chairs with a center walk-through area. These spacious, comfortable chairs give your passengers room to spread out and provide thorough body support. We like to show them to parents of teenagers who are reaching that age where they don’t want to sit in “children’s seats.”

The walk-through area makes it easy for third-row passengers to get to their seats. No climbing over a middle bench or folding down second-row seats. Let your rear passengers get to their seats with dignity by using the center walk-through. It’s just like walking through the aisle of an airplane.

Second-Row Window Shades for Sun Control

Nobody likes it when the sun’s rays come piercing through the window. But if you’re driving at certain times of the day, it can be hard to avoid this problem. Luckily, your second-row passengers no longer need to resort to draping a sweater over the window to get a little shade. The second row of the CX-90 PHEV enjoys retractable window shades. Passengers can pull them down when they want to escape the sun or put them up when they want some Vitamin D.

Three-Zone Climate Control for Zero Climate Conflicts

The CX-90 PHEV gets three-zone automatic climate control. That means that different rows can determine the temperature where they’re sitting. And that means you can stop having arguments over the perfect temperature for the cabin. Since the climate control is automatic, it will recall your preferred settings each time you start the engine. You don’t have to fuss with the controls every time you get in the vehicle, and neither do your passengers.

Every driver knows the headache of managing temperature requests while trying to focus on the road. Kiss that experience goodbye. Thanks to the cabin pollen filter, you can also say goodbye to sniffles and congestion in the vehicle. It will collect dust and pollen and keep it from floating through the cabin. This is a terrific feature for passengers with severe seasonal allergies.

Generous Room for All

All three rows of the CX-90 PHEV have a generous amount of room. Second and third-row passengers will enjoy a great deal of headroom, shoulder room, and legroom. In fact, with 39.3 inches of headroom and 39.4 inches of legroom, the second row is more spacious than the first row in some smaller vehicles. If you have tall passengers or just finicky ones, they’ll like not having to fight to sit in the front seats.
